A Short History
The magic wand… how can a stick be a magician’s best friend?
Difficult though it is to believe for ordinary people, close observation of any magician would reveal that they treat their wand as an extension of their body and do not part with it even for a second.
For them, it is not just a tool of their trade but a constant companion that shares a deep understanding with its master.
It is possible to perform magic without a wand too but it is a feat that requires extremely high levels of concentration which only a few can acquire.
In such a situation, what else should the wand be called if not the magician’s best friend?
There are several instances that enable a layman to realise the importance of a magic wand in the life of a magician, but a fact that inarguably establishes a connection between magicians and their wands relates to their methods of choosing.
Magicians cannot opt for just any wand, nor can they deliver results if they have chosen their tool as though they might be picking a stick out of a pile. If magicians truly experience the power of the supernatural within themselves, then they would automatically be drawn towards a magic wand that would match their personality in every way.
Sufficient proof of this has been provided in the globally acclaimed Harry Potter series wherein Mr Olliwander of Diagon Alley never fails to stress the point that it is the wand which chooses the wizard.
This sentiment is echoed by wand makers in the real world too wherein manufacturers state that depending on your skill level you would be drawn towards a particular type of wand.
Sure enough, the tool thus chosen would not only obey its master’s command but would also perform miracles of unmatched quality.
The Magic Wand is Priceless in the
Hand of a Magician
Does this mean that the wand, even though being just an inanimate object, is as faithful to its master as a loyal dog?
To begin with, a magic wand cannot be described as being completely inanimate – in fact its ability of being able to choose its own master is reflective of its attribute of having some semblance of life within.
So it could be best described as being quasi-sentient, wherein quasi refers to a fraction and sentient means perception or consciousness. Hence, a wand is not a living thing but it is not a non-living object either.
It carries within itself a small portion of life that enables it to connect with its master, the magician, and follow their orders without question.
Courtesy of the understanding between the wand and its user, magicians rely on it as the primary tool with which to channel their magical energy and power to accomplish feats that are beyond the scope of common people.
Intentions may vary from one magician to another as some might practice magic to amaze others while others might use it to evoke healing or spirituality.
Depending on the skill level of the magician, a wand may be used in combination with a spell but many times spells are cast mentally and the wand does exactly what its master wants.
Irrespective of whether the magic wand is wooden, metallic or carved out of stone, it is a tool that transmits your mental power to the outside world and is therefore aptly termed as being the magician’s best friend.
